Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) is the authoritative source for financial news in the Greater China region. Its official website provides Chinese translation for most English news releases. This article explores how modal verb translation helps to rebuild the institutional authority behind texts by studying the use and translation of modal verbs in public censure stories in HKEx press releases. A corpus-based approach was used in the study to collect 130 articles of public censure published on HKEx website from 2000-2009. The results show that the translation of modal verbs enhances the authoritative tone of the text, a change that may be related to the socio-cultural context of text producers and consumers of different texts.
