The samples studied are from the Precambrian Sukinda ultramafic rocks extended from NE to EO direction in Orissa. This rock extension of 20 km, 3-5 km wide. Samples were taken from a depth of 35 meters to the east of Shah Alam town (latitude 21o 03 ’, longitude 85o48’ east). Most of the ultramafic rocks cover nickel-bearing laterites up to 30 meters thick and the rest are alluvial deposits. Despite the poor exposure, serpentine dunites are distinguished from fresh orthopyroxenes. The dunite is characterized by a large chromite layer, often extending more than 1 km along the strike and 3-5 m in thickness, but it is not clear if it extends deeper, but it is greater than 50
