Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of continuous subcutaneous insulin injections (CSII) and multiple subcutaneous insulin injections (MDI) in the treatment of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) ≥60 years of age. Methods 236 patients in CSII group and 206 patients in MDI group were treated with short-term intensive insulin therapy. Blood glucose, blood glucose, blood glucose, insulin dosage and incidence of hypoglycemia were compared. Results The time to reach the goal in CSII group was (6.3 ± 2.1) d, (7.4 ± 2.5) days in MDI group and significantly faster in CSII group (P <0.05). The CSII group had lower blood glucose control level (P <0.05) The incidence of hypoglycemia was no significant difference (P> 0.05). Conclusions Comparisons of two intensive treatments of older T2DM in larger samples demonstrate that CSII controls blood glucose faster and more effectively with no significant increase in the risk of hypoglycemia in elderly patients with acute hyperglycemia in T2DM.
