In June this year, Tanzania and Uganda will launch a five-year banana pilot project aimed at increasing the level of banana cultivation in the two countries, increasing banana production and enhancing banana pest and disease resistance. Last October, the plan raised $ 13.8 million from the Gates Foundation for start-up funding. The plan will help banana growers in both countries increase their banana output, one of the main foods in Tanzania and Uganda. According to the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, bananas grown in Uganda and Tanzania comprise 50% of the total bananas grown in Africa, but the potential output of bananas is only about 9% due to pests and diseases.
