大雪山位于云南省永德县东部,在动物地理区划上处于东洋界西南区西南山地亚区与华南区滇南亚区交界。由于大雪山是横断山脉怒山山系的南部延伸,使某些古北界动物种类得以沿山南下;由大雪山发源的河流水系多注入怒江的国外河段萨尔温江而使得东洋界华南区动物逆河北上,两大区界动物在大雪山过渡重叠。这样,不同区系的动物种类在这里和谐地融合在一个生态类群里。大雪山又是我国北纬二十四度以南大陆上的最高峰,海拔高差悬
