Future European data relay satellites intend to use optical technology to establish high data rate communication links. Several European space agencies conducted years of intensive research into the optical technologies of CO 2 lasers with a wavelength of 10.6 μm and semiconductor lasers with a wavelength of 0.8 to 1.3 μm.
