臼田宇宙空间观测站是1986年哈雷彗星接近地球时,为了和哈雷彗星探测器通信而建设的,该观测站不仅是日本唯一的深空通信站,而且在世界上也占有重要地位,由于该站大型天线具有波束导波分系统向天线馈电的特点,因此该观测站受到世界同仁的重视。最引人注目的是观测站的直径为64米的卡塞格伦式天线总重量为2000吨,它以0.003度的高精度全天候全方位工作。
