Oryol, Russia, is the site of implementation of the World Health Organization (WHO) TB Control Program. Using data collected from the AIDS and Infectious Disease Centers, researchers confirmed that the prevalence of HIV-1 infection in the region of Orel increased 32-fold in four years. The rapid spread of HIV-1 in Russia has seriously affected the epidemic of tuberculosis control. Although the HIV-1 pandemic is currently at an early stage, aggressive offensive measures need to be promptly adopted to avoid the adverse effects of the widespread epidemic on tuberculosis control, as has already been the case in sub-Saharan Africa.
