竞技体育亦称竞技运动,是体育的重要组成部分,它是以体育竞赛为主要特征,以创造优异运动成绩,夺取比赛优胜为主要目标的社会体育活动。十八大报告提出:“广泛开展全民健身运动,促进群众体育和竞技体育全面发展。”贯彻落实好十八大提出的“促进竞技体育全面发展”的要求,扎扎实实地抓好教练员队伍的建设,是现阶段高校亟待解决的问题。教练员队伍是高校竞技体育发展的基本保障,科学合理的教练员队伍应该是一支具备有一定高水平运动队的训练经历、具备先进的训练理念、能掌握和运用现代科学的训练方法、能够将产、学、研有机结合并不断提高竞技体育成绩的综合队伍。当前的教练员队伍结构与高校竞技体育持续发展的需求相对滞后,因此,要保证竞技体育的持续发展,首先要解决教练员队伍的发展问题,加强教练员队伍的自身建设,促进教练员队伍发展壮大。
