After the coronary artery is blocked, aspirin can improve blood flow in the ischemic area by inhibiting platelet aggregation. However, aspirin also blocks the synthesis of prostacyclin and other vasodilative prostaglandins, thereby reducing blood flow to the ischemic myocardium. This article studies the effect of aspirin at a platelet inhibitory dose on coronary collateral flow after acute coronary occlusion in dogs.
