作为中国现代生理科学的奠基者，林可胜是个颇具传奇色彩的人。他生于新加坡，持英国护照，但有着强烈的民族意识。他的一生经历过两种生涯：一方面，他是个杰出的生理学家和生理科学的组织者、领导者，既为中国现代生理学的建立和发展作出了不朽功绩，又丰富了世界生理学宝库；另一方面，他是个忠诚的爱国者，在祖国处于危难关头，投身于抗日前线战地救护的组织、领导工作，舍生忘死、忍辱负重，为抗日战争的胜利做出了无私的奉献。对腐败官场的失望和对科学事业的向往，使他在中断科研十余年后重操旧业，在大洋彼岸再创佳绩。尽管客死他乡，生前始终关心着自己祖国的命运
