By the time Shangyu Hometown Celebrities Institute was set up in January 2001, Chen Qiuqiang had been looking into local celebrities for more than ten years. Shangyu is a county-level city in Shaoxing in eastern Zhejiang and hometown to a lot of national and regional celebrities.
The institute was the first of its kind in China back then. Xie Jin, a big-time film director and native of Shangyu, traveled all the way from Shanghai to Shangyu and spoke at the celebration ceremony for the founding of the institute.
Born in 1943, Chen Qiuqiang did not come to the hometown celebrities project until a little bit late in his life. He is from a family of educated people and worked as a middle school master for more than ten years. After the reform and opening up to the outside world started in the 1980s, he got himself engaged in business. In these business years, however, he became sharply aware that the regional culture might get overwhelmed in the modernization drive if no rescue efforts were to be taken immediately. He believed that Shangyu deserved more attention to history and hometown celebrities. He made the decision to step down from business administration so that he would have more time for looking into the local culture. He dedicated his spare time to field studies and text researches. He traveled through all of the 21 rural towns of Shangyu, chatting with old people and visiting former residences of hometown celebrities in villages and towns. The researches and visits enabled him to publish more than 50 articles in local media about hometown celebrities. His crusade to save the regional history and culture touched the heart of local people.
One day, an old man came to visit him and handed him a pile of research materials on the regional culture and history he had spent a lifetime to put together. The old man wanted Chen to get the researches for future use. Shortly after the visit, the old man passed away. Then a retired school teacher in his 90s sought Chen out and wanted Chen to keep a few notebooks for good. The notebooks were all about local culture and history of Shangyu.
The two gifts made Chen think about future. Those older than him were not in a position to do more and those younger than him didn’t know what to do. He was about to retire and would have a lot of time on his hands. So he took it upon himself to pool efforts and set up an institute.
Unexpectedly, people responded fervently. More than 100 people signed up to join the institute in January 2001.
Over the past 16 years, Chen and his comrades at the institute have done quite a lot to get to facts and names. One of the jobs they do is to find old tombs of hometown celebrities and tombstones if tombs are no more. One day, he heard about a tombstone of Liu Lyu, a representative scholar of Eastern Zhejiang School of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The next day he rushed to the village only to find that the tombstone was part of a wall outside a house. He didn’t know what to do until he learned the house belonged to a former classmate he hadn’t met for more than 40 years. They chatted for the whole morning and the owner agreed to get the tombstone out of the wall.
Over the past 16 years, the institute has organized over 30 visits to hometown celebrities across the country, including those in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The institute keeps in touch with 1,800 hometown people living and working beyond Shangyu. Moreover, the institute runs an exhibition hall to display the best known hometown celebrities.
The institute has done more to collect names and keep them in touch. Over the past 16 years, the institute has held symposiums and workshops on more than 30 occasions. It has published over 30 books on local history, culture and celebrities. The institute now has 20 chapters across the city. The members of the institute are local counselors playing key roles in the economic and social development in their towns and villages. In recent years, local celebrities have donated 1.8 billions to 180 public projects.
