苏伊士运河作为东西方之间最经济的海上航路,在国际海上贸易服务中起着极为重要的作用.运河是埃及四大经济支柱之一,是埃及政府赚取外汇的一个重要渠道.1992年共16663艘次的船舶过往运河,运河收入达19.5亿美元.埃及政府为增加运河收益,将过河费年年上调,1993年过河费比1992年提高3%.支付运河费成了国际各航运公司一笔重大开支,因此研究如何减付过河费是各国船东们十分感兴趣而又重要的课题.
