In the early winter, naturally ventilated cooling towers are extremely sensitive to icing. In order to avoid damaging the construction-related components, such as fixed shutters, fillers and their support systems, operators are often forced to operate the equipment below optimal thermal efficiency. Fortunately for several cross-flow and counter-flow cooling towers there are several technologies available to prevent freezing that can be used to help operate the tower at maximum output without any risk.
