兩宋之時,臨濟宗、雲門宗、曹洞宗興盛。三宗之中,惟有臨濟宗法脈不斷,產生了很多著名的禪林大德,巴蜀地區也不例外。據不完全統計,宋代巴蜀地區共產生了約145位臨濟禪僧。本文以石霜楚圓、密庵咸傑爲界,分三段考察兩宋巴蜀臨濟宗,初步勾勒宋代巴蜀臨濟禪僧的概貌。隋唐五代之時,禪宗一花開五葉,臨濟宗、溈仰宗、曹洞宗、雲門宗、法眼宗等五宗各自取得了不同程度的發展,產生了名震一時的高僧大德。五代末年至北宋初年,溈仰宗幾乎失傳。第三代祖師永明延壽(904—975)之後,
When the two Song, Lin Jizong, Cloud Gate cases, Cao Dongzong prosperity.
