曾几何时，在温馨的大院小巷里，邻里间像老朋友般打着招呼，互敬互爱；孩子们都结为儿时的玩伴，快乐地一起走过了童年；一家有难，多家帮助，大家像兄弟姐妹一样相互扶持……然而，时代变了，社会发展了，人际关系变复杂了，忙碌奔波于各种事务的人们已经疲于面对邻里关系，过去对彼此敞开的大门早已紧闭。那么，现代人何时才能重拾过去的那份纯真与真情？“国际好邻居节”的发起也许是个好的契机！
The neighbourly gift. Imagine a world with a new holiday， one we don’t have yet called “Good Morning Neighbour”. It is already an exchange of gifts when we say that much and hear our neighbour’s “good morning” in response. But now imagine a special day when we could do more. We give our neighbour a gift with some small cash value. It could be a flower， it could be an 1）origami 2）poodle for their children， it could be a sample of your favourite 3）cuisine. Small is beautiful. Small is also 4）ingenious， and knows how to pack a lot of your own 5）personality into a 6）snug space. This will be an international holiday， and in our 7）globalized societies， it will 8）permit neighbours from most cultures to meet one another. The neighbourly gift will not solve headline problems like joblessness or global warming， but if it turns stranger neighbours into friendly neighbours， then it will already have taken our collective 9）civility one step forward.
邻里间互送礼物。想象世界有一个新的节日，这个我们还没有的节日叫做“早上好邻居节”。如果我们经常说“早上好”这句话，邻居们也回赠我们一句“早上好”，这已经是一种礼物的交换。然而，现在想象一个我们能够做得更多的特别节日。花一点钱来送礼物给我们的邻居。可以送花，可以送小狗的折纸给他们的孩子，可以送你最喜欢的一道菜。小事很美好；小事很奇妙，能够将你许多个性浓缩到一个小的空间里。这将变成一个国际性的节日，在我们全球化的社会，它会让大部分来自不同文化的邻居们彼此结识。邻里间的礼物互赠虽然不能解决热点问题，如失业或全球变暖，但是如果这能够使陌生的邻居变得友好起来，就已经让我们的集体文明更进一步了。
