Recently, Vice Minister Wang Zengyi of the Ministry of Communications in charge of highway traffic interviewed the reporter of this journal and made a speech on several major issues concerning China’s highway construction. He spoke about it from a mountainous perspective: Although China’s road construction has witnessed rapid development in recent years, it still cannot adequately meet the development needs of the commodity economy. China’s road transport started late. After the first road was built in Hunan in 1913, by the end of 1949, there were only 80,000 kilometers of roads and cars in the country.
