Shajiansun, the author of this book, is a famous expert in history of the Communist Party of China and has created many works. On the 120th anniversary of the birth of Mao Zedong, he wrote a monograph titled General Theory of Mao Zedong Thought (published in October 2013 by the People's Publishing House) with the word number of 730,000, which manifests his profound academic foundation in this research field.
After reading this great work, I summarized the following three outstanding characteristics.
Firstly, it's systematic and detailed in discussion. This book is composed of five parts. The first part is an overview, in which it mainly talks about the national and social conditions when Mao Zedong Thought was put forward, as well as the formation, development history and historical status of the Thought. As for the rest three parts, it respectively discusses the theories about New Democratic Revolution, Socialist Transformation and Socialist Construction in Mao Zedong Thought. Such arrangement covers all aspects of the Thought and is very systematic in structure. In addition, the author arranges important special topics in appropriate part to specially discuss, which indicates his great originality. For example, in the first part, he titles the first chapter "Fundamental Realities and Historical Theme of Modern China" to present the social and historical condition for the generation of Mao Zedong Thought. Following this chapter, the book specially expounds "Mao Zedong Thought is the Marxism-Leninism applied in a Chinese context" to highlight the basic development venation of Mao Zedong Thought. The interpretation of these problems not only can help readers understand many unique theories of Mao Zedong Thought, but also inspire readers to further understand the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
Secondly, it's meticulous and rigorous in sorting. By virtue of years of effort in research, the author makes a careful and detailed analysis on Mao Zedong's theoretical contributions in different historical periods including democratic revolution, socialist revolution and socialist construction. If you read the contents in each chapter concluded in these four parts, you'll clearly realize the author's effort made in sorting. For example, in the second part, the author arranges the contents like this: first, he talks about the general line of New Democratic Revolution for this is the outlining; second, he presents the guiding principles for they are developed following the general line; third, he narrates China's path, accompanying the contents about armed struggle and people's army; thus, it links with another two terms of Three Weapons, namely united front and Party building, forming a complete system; at last, he analyzes reasons and basic experience of Chinese revolution and its victory. Such a discussion order is developed according to the theory of New Democratic Revolution in Mao Zedong Thought; yet, it's inconsistent with the generation and development of Mao Zedong Thought. However, its defects cannot obscure the virtues. For another example, the arrangement in the fourth part is also characteristic. In this part, theory of socialist construction in Mao Zedong Thought is expounded, which is rare in previous monographs. It's obvious that the author has made great efforts in sorting. He makes a framework for us, in which it covers the general principle and approach for exploring the way of socialist construction, reflection on problems in socialist social development, the determination of Four Modernizations and two-step strategy conception, socialist economic construction, political development and cultural development. With so systematic sorting, the book can deeply impress readers with the rich connotation of socialist construction in Mao Zedong Thought. Thirdly, it's dialectical and sufficient in arguing. In recent years, some distortive ideological trends, especially the ideological trend of historical nihilism, occur in the research of Mao Zedong Thought, which makes some correct ideas be doubted. In fact, those doubters have no in-depth research or reflection on the original works of Mao Zedong Thought, but making clear of these problems is never an easy job. With years of accumulation in scientific research and teaching, the author specially argues some problems. For example, it should be specific and easy to understand the transitional nature of new democracy society and its inexorable trend of developing toward socialist society; however, this is distorted by various discussions in recent years. Therefore, the author writes much to correct the distortion. First, he compares the revolutions in China and Europe to explain that the capitalism ruled by bourgeoisie could never appear in China after the victory of revolution and the victory of Chinese revolution must be closely linked with the development direction of socialism. Then, the author analyzes the influence of Chinese Communist Party leaders on the future economic sectors in China; the results of his analysis are reflected in decisions made at the Second Plenary Session of the Seventh Central Committee of Communist Party of China in which it declares the general assignment and main methods of transforming China from an agricultural country to an industrial country as well as from new democracy society to socialist society. All these examples fully indicate that what the Chinese Communist Party has changed is their understanding about the duration and transform approach of the transition period, and the change in former understanding is based on the reconfirmation of the later one.
The formation of each characteristic has its reason. The abovementioned characteristics of this book have close relation with the author's experiences: he has accumulated rich experience and a large number of problems raised by young teachers and students in the process of studying the history of the Communist Party of China and teaching. The publication of this book, as the author has said, not only sorts and summarizes his long- term research, but also provides readers a fundamental reading, reference book and reference for teaching. I think these purposes are undoubtedly reached.
