Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women (70%~80% of all cancer cases) and the mortality is still high [1, 2]. Here we evaluated the mechanisms of radiation injuries in breast cancer cells. In our study, MCF-7 cells were irradiated with 12C6+ ion or X-rays. The cellular survival rate, cycle and apoptosis were measured by clonogenic assay and flow cytometry. The expression of BRCA1 and P21 proteins were determined by western blot. The results showed a significant proliferative effect on MCF-7 cells at low dose (2 Gy) in X-ray irradiated group (Fig. 1). There were dose-dependent changes in carbon-ion irradiated group (Fig. 1). The data indicated that MCF-7 cells had strong radioresistance at dose of 2 Gy by X-rays irradiation, the mechanisms of this phenomenon is related to BRCA1 and P21 protein expression.
