Abstract Objective To prospectively compare DNA double-strand breaks induced by cardiac CT and conventional coronary angiography (CCA). Methods 56 patients suspected of having coronary heart disease were randomized to receive CCA or cardiac CT. DNA double-stranded breaks were assessed using a blood lymphocyte fluorescence microscope as a biological effect indicator of radiation exposure. The radiation dose is estimated using the dose length product (DLP) and the dose area product (DAP), and the respective conversion factors for CT and CCA. Results There was an average of 0.12 ± 0.06 and 0.29 ± 0.18 DNA double strand breaks per lymphocyte in CT and CCA groups (P <0.001).
