通常螺旋压缩弹簧应具有尽可能小的体积,又能产生必要的工程行程以及载荷能力。一般通过试验和反复计算,才能确定弹簧的最省料尺寸。这里介绍一个简单的方法,不需要多次反复计算就能一次定出弹簧的最佳尺寸。这个办法是将弹簧的体积方程式对弹簧常数求导数,并使它等于零。然后通过移行,把方程变为弹簧参数和弹簧常数的关系式。推导过程略。结果是:为使弹簧体积最小,弹簧用料最少,必须满足下面公式:
