1934年7月15日,红军北上抗日先遣队由连城塘前、尧家畲进入永安境内洪沙,与护送其渡闽江北上的红九军团先头部队会师后,旋经麟厚、冷水溪、大小吴地前往漳平县属的香寮。到香寮后,先遣队突然又挥师永安城关,经洪田、湍石、上石,18日到西洋。先遣队一部占据永安城郊的黄历、桂口,19日形成对永安城的包围；一部经桃源直奔大田。先遣队包围永安的同时,红九军团军团部及后卫部队也进入了永安境内罗坊、安砂、曹远,22日到达永安城郊。至此,两路红军对永安城进行钳形包围。当晚,先遣队将阵地移交红九军团第七团接替后,继续北上。这一日,先遣队和红九军团在城外南来北往,自由驰骋,其势蔚为壮观。永安被围之敌惶惶不可终日,慑于红军的声威,他们不敢出城迎战,龟缩城内,瞎放枪炮以壮胆。先遣队为了完成中央交给的任务,在敌人没有觉察其入闽意图之前争取时间顺利渡过闽江北上,而对永安城围而不攻。红九军团接手阵地后,先遣队即穿过永安地区,直指闽江。
