In recent years there have been occasional statements that the cooling tower of a nuclear power plant endangers the health of the surrounding residents because the exhaust gas may entrap fibers that fall from the asbestos-cement board in the tower. In 1978, the Swiss Federal Energy Agency commissioned the Swiss Materials Laboratory to begin analyzing the exhaust gas from the cooling tower at the Goshen Nuclear Power Plant. The Institute provides a comprehensive analysis of the amount of fibers in the exhaust gas that may be hazardous to the health of their residents.
