Objective To evaluate the antihypertensive efficacy of enalapril in short-term treatment of middle-aged and elderly patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension in rural areas. Methods From May 2008 to July 2009, 7 716 mild to moderate essential hypertension patients 45 to 75 years old were enrolled in Anqing City, Anhui Province and Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province. Enalapril 10 mg / d, for 3 weeks. Through the telephone and home visit, the standardized medication for living in the community was guaranteed and the antihypertensive efficacy of enalapril for 3 weeks was observed. Results After 3 weeks of treatment, the changes of systolic blood pressure were (-17.3 ± 16.9) mmHg and (-18.5 ± 17.6) mmHg in male and female patients, respectively. The changes of diastolic blood pressure were (-6.8 ± 9.4) mmHg and ± 9.0) mmHg. The effective rates of blood pressure lowering were 49.3% and 49.1%, respectively. The compliance rates of blood pressure lowering were 41.0% and 43.5% respectively. The change of systolic blood pressure was (-16.5 ± 16.1) mmHg and (-18.6 ± 16.6) mmHg respectively in male and female patients in Lianyungang Hospital, and the change of diastolic blood pressure was (-7.0 ± 9.9) mmHg and (-6.4 ± 9.4) mmHg respectively The effective rates of pressure were 51.8% and 50.9%, respectively. The compliance rates of pressure lowering were 39.4% and 42.4% respectively. All age groups were effective in lowering blood pressure, effective rate of blood pressure and compliance rate was no significant difference. Conclusions In rural areas, taking enalapril for the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension can achieve good short-term antihypertensive effect and an ideal hypotensive efficiency and compliance rate.
