Outsourcing, once sought after by cost-conscious IT executives, has now revealed its vulnerabilities. In October 2003, global outsourcing almost ruined the school hospital at the University of California, San Francisco. To save money, medical schools outsource thousands of medical records to people. On the other side of the globe, a Pakistani woman transcribes one part of it. Everything looks normal for both - neither side knows each other because there are 3 subcontractors. But everything changed when Texas subcontractors failed to pay the woman. Pakistanis directly contact UCSF and threaten to put these confidential patient information on the Internet if she is not helped to pay.
