儒教作为国教随着皇朝的覆灭而崩溃,儒教宗教化的努力在共和建立后终归失败。但儒家精神未灭,儒教在未来有可能或许也有必要建设成为公教——公共之教(public teaching)或公民宗教(civil religion)。公教的建立需要避免三个歧途(第六大宗教、独大宗教或伪宗教),需要发扬其超验之意志天的观念,需要发扬华夏一贯的兼容精神。基督教已经成为中国人中最主要的宗教之一,拥有独特而重要的理念资源和制度资源。理念上使得传统文化的创造性转化成为可能,制度上有助于儒家理念的传承延续,其与社会的张力程度又颇合中庸之道。
