At present, there is at least one dozen “push” products on the market. This crowded “push” product market forces distributors to innovate so as to maintain a slight advantage in the market. There is no doubt that when IE 4.0 and Constellation are released later this year, this market will be dominated by Microsoft and Netscape. The most promising innovations are likely to change some of the better “push” products, from a limited web-based document publishing system to a full-fledged intelligent agent software. Unlike other intelligent agents that try to solve the problem of information overload, “push” products stand out from the group of products with their more comprehensive solutions. Proxy software, known for its simplicity, is typically used to monitor whether a data source has changed, and to alert the user in some way when a change occurs. Of course, most current “push” products are like this.
