As humankind’s growing demand for meat products, increasing levels of trade liberalization and advances in science and technology have led to more than two-fold increases in the world’s meat trade over the past 30 years. In 2000, the total volume of world meat trade reached 24 million tons; the trade volume reached 43 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for about 10% of the total world trade in agricultural products. Between 1990 and 2000, the world’s meat trade grew at an average annual rate of 6%, far exceeding the growth in trade in other agricultural products. The United States, the European Union, Australia, Canada, Brazil and Argentina are the largest meat exporters in the world, while Russia, Japan, China and Mexico are the largest meat importers.
