背景知识
As the capital of China， Beijing is one of the world？蒺s truly imposing cities， with a 3，000-year history and 11 million people. Covering 16，808 square kilometers in area， it is the political， cultural and economic center of the People's Republic.
北京，作为中国的首都，在世界上是一个真正美丽的城市，有着3000年历史和一千一百万人口。占地面积16808平方公里，是中华人民共和国政治、文化和经济的中心。
Situated in northeast China， Beijing adjoins the Inner Mongolian Highland to the northwest and the Great Northern Plain to the south. Five rivers run through the city， connecting it to the eastern Bohai Sea. Administratively， the Beijing municipality equals the status of a province， reporting directly to the central government.
北京位于中国东北部，毗邻内蒙古高原西北部和北部大平原的南部。五条河流穿过这座城市，连接到东部的渤海。在行政上，北京市相当于中国的一个省，直接归中央政府管理。

China？蒺s imperial past and political present meet at Tiananmen square， where the Forbidden City palace of the emperors gives way to the Great Hall of the People congress building and the mausoleum of Chairman Mao Zedong.
