P40 is a T-cell-derived lymphokine that sustains the growth of certain non-antigen dependent mouse Th clones over the long term. P40 differs from IL-2 and IL-4 in that it is a novel T-cell growth factor (TCGF) that has been named IL-9. The authors used recombinant P40 and different mouse cell lines to confirm the presence of a P40-specific receptor (P40-R) on the surface of these cells and to investigate the functional and biochemical properties of P40-R.
