Mankind has long noticed the phenomenon of mineral heat. Since the 1950s, luminescence has been used more and more to solve geosciences problems. At present, luminescence has been applied to archeology, chronology, stratigraphy, meteorite and lunar rock research. In addition to determining the geologic age, palaeo-temperature, dividing and contrasting stratigraphy, tracing the thermal history of minerals and rocks, it is also used to infer the magma temperature and to study the alteration of rock and ore prospecting in the field of magmatic rocks and mineral deposits.
