According to the world register of the International Commission on Dams, there are about 40,000 dams above 15m in the world, while the number of dams below 15m may be even more. As almost every dam has at least one spillway, the number of spillways in the world can reach hundreds of thousands. Spillways, like every dam, have their own particularities, so hundreds of thousands of spillways can make a big difference. However, they also have similarities. For example, each spillway can be divided into four sections: control engineering, water inlet engineering, waterway engineering and water outlet engineering.
