Transnational operations are full of many unpredictable things. Fortunately, some unexpected events have brought unexpected benefits to the relevant multinational companies. For example, a U.S. company that sells women’s sanitary napkins in South America suddenly saw its sales increase. When it found that the surge in sales was due to local farmers buying such sanitary napkins as masks, it was a bit surprised but still very happy. In the late 1960s, a U.S. company that sold toothpaste in southern Vietnam experienced the same surprise, with an unexpected surge in sales. Many years later, the company discovered that the original Vietnamese Communist Party purchased toothpaste for wiping weapons.
