In the book, Beccaria pains the old penalty system and its drawbacks, revealing the nature of his obscurantism. What makes this book the author’s deepest feelings is Beccaria’s lenient attitude toward punishment, his clear opposition to the death penalty, and his tactfully euphemism for criticizing ignorant religious persecution.
