当代小麦育种工作的一大特点是重视基础理论的研究和包括遗传、生理生化、植保、农化等在内的多学科协作,而改善株型结构、提高光能利用率等,又日渐成为小麦育种基础理论研究的重要內容。此外对品种资源的收集与利用十分重视。如美国农业部农业研究中心,保存小麦原始材料2.6万份,苏联全苏作物研究所,保存世界小麦品种资源2万多份。就小麦育种目标而言,普遍注重以下几个方面:
