By 2000, India’s national rail freight volume will reach 450 million to 500 million tons, doubling the volume of traffic. Passenger traffic will also have similar growth. The current rail transport is still steam, internal combustion, electricity three traction. In order to meet the tremendous growth in traffic volume, a huge railway electrification plan has been formulated. The plan stipulates that the railroads connecting Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Madras, as well as other major routes, will be electrified. To this end, electrification projects of 500 to 600 km of railways will be completed each year. The total length of the trunk line is about 12,000 to 13,000 km (of which 4,700 km has been electrified)
