Austin’s work shows both subtle and complex relationships with the female novelist’s “preaching tradition.” She inherited this tradition, confining her life and ideology to an area of interest for men. Her inheritance of this tradition shows her some degree of compromise with the patriarchal center culture of that time. This kind of compromise is a survival strategy for women in disadvantaged positions who want to base themselves on the literary world. At the same time, Austin has never stopped rebellion against this tradition. Austin has surpassed the anxiety of authorship by acquiring the authentic authority of the female literature by following and substituting the patriarchal literary standards, laying a solid foundation in the history of literature. Her writing provides a paradigm for female writers in the patriarchal society, presenting a vivid picture of women’s writing.
