In May 1987, the U.S.Ship “Stark” was hit hard by the legal “flying fish” missile launched by Iraqi combat aircraft while performing routine patrols in the Persian Gulf. The resulting explosion and fire killed 37 crew members and the entire U.S. Navy was greatly shaken. This incident is a striking reminder that warships are vulnerable to attack by a new generation of advanced anti-ship missiles. The missiles hit the Oliver Hazard-Perry destroyers and ensuing fire, prompting the United States Navy to renew its interest in improving the anti-ship defense systems and tactics of its ships.
