Yu Xiong, MD, of Nagoya University in Osaka, Japan, said that pressure waves at the tracheal resonance frequency cleared sputum in 18 of 19 patients with chronic respiratory diseases. Astigmatism is ineffective in these patients, because patients have difficulty changing their position. Pressure is generated by a pressure wave generator, while the patient holds the tube and breathes it into the mouth.
