从中国西洋画的摇篮——“土山湾”的发展开始到现在,中国油画已有一百多年的历史,但是把西方写实主义引入中国的却是徐悲鸿。在中国写实主义油画的发展过程中,徐悲鸿称得上举足轻重的人物,他毕生的经历来推动中国油画的发展。1928年开始徐悲鸿用了三年的时间创作了他的一生中最重要的、最典型的历史画代表——《田横五百士》画家希望将历史文献中记载的故事通过他在巴黎学到的历史画的知识表现出来。徐悲鸿的确受到历史故事的气节——这个精神特质很容易被人为地转换为西方历史画的“崇高”的感染……徐悲鸿的目的要告诉人们:
