珠江是西江、北江和东江的总称.根据珠江河口区域的地质、地貌和水文特征,通常把东江的石龙、流溪河的江村、北江的芦苞、西江的羚羊峡和潭江的石咀等地以下下游交织处称为珠江三角洲,面积约1万平方公里.处于同一个动态体系,其上游为河谷平原,而在毗邻的南海北部大陆架上为现代三角洲水下部分(前三角洲沉积),展布到约-45米,面积约1万平方公里. 历来的地质学家均把三角洲作为一个重要的海洋地质体加以详细研究,提出了三角洲发育的多种模式.关于珠江三角洲的研究,1915年W.Olivecrona根据埋藏牡蛎壳(Ostrea sp.)的分布推论,西、北、东三江泥沙于海湾里合力堆积成三角洲,并称为广州三角洲;G.D.Hubbard首次研究了珠江三角洲的地貌问题.三十年代以来的文献反映了对珠江三角洲研究的进展.本文拟对珠江三角洲的形成和发展问题作进一步的探讨.
