As the worst economic recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s, the economic crisis that began in 2008 has in fact become another recession. The root cause of this disaster lies in the inherent systemic risks of the capitalist economic system. Therefore, it marks a major failure of the capitalist system characterized by free market competition. Beyond the government that performs the economic regulatory role, the economics profession has an unshirkable responsibility for the crisis. The mainstream economics in the past three decades, especially in macroeconomics and financial theory, has major flaws in methodology and useful theories have been poorly endowed. The disappointment of the public in the performance of the economic profession before and after the economic crisis underscored the crisis facing this academic field. The current economic crisis and economic crisis have provided lessons and enlightenment for China’s economic development and economics. In particular, the Chinese economists should be wary of epistemological fallacies and harmful practices in market fundamentalism. Social science researchers such as economics must constrain their ideological preconceptions, face and commit themselves to resolving real-world problems in a pragmatic manner, and constantly seek new knowledge and pursue self-transcendence.
