This essay analyzes the love experiences of both Adenau and Robert in The Awakening to reveal that secular expectations and legal restrictions offer little chance, let alone independence, of women’s individuality in the nineteenth century. Women in Victorian life fulfill their family responsibilities, care for the health and well-being of their families, and disallow them from satisfying their individual needs. In the process of Edna’s gradual awakening, she discovered herself and acknowledged her desire for affection and sexuality. However, this lonely awakening is unacceptable and eventually leads to death, which in turn means rebirth awakening in solitude.
