五四时期,陈独秀的革命启蒙呈现出的是一种自主的、进步的、进取的、世界的、实利的、科学的精神态度。其倡导的文学革命就是这一思维方式在文学领域的运用,而不是用其参与其他革命。然而,这种把理性原则当作救路的科学革命运动,并没有使作为个体存在的陈独秀在彻底反传统的勇气中品尝到克服民族危机的喜悦,在其自信的启蒙言说的背后,伴随着的始终是无法摆脱的重重矛盾。由此,其革命思维中相伴相随的神学沉思反而显示出深长的意味,这使其与历代革命者不能不有着精神情怀上的巨大差异。
