Caterpillar predicts that diesel engines will be the main source of power for heavy mobile devices in the 21st century. This will be guaranteed by improvements in alternative fuel, fuel economy and emissions control. (The above issues have been in this volume Volume III, Section II - Editor). According to a recent report in the Financial Times, the problem with diesel engines is that the world’s non-automobile diesel engine manufacturing plants have been experiencing problems for many years. That is, over 50% of the world’s diesel engine production capacity has exceeded that of demand, and has lasted for many years in the industrial field. But signs of easing have emerged as the immense imbalance between productive capacity and demand. The most noticeable change in the regrouping of production was the alliance between General Motors and John Deere’s diesel engine manufacturing plant in July 1986. United GM
