Objective To investigate the detection and clinical significance of high body metabolism in children with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Methods Forty-eight children who were diagnosed as SIRS underwent blood glucose, blood lactate and blood gas analysis, and compared with the control group. Results The incidence of SIRS in acute critically ill children with ICU was 52.17%. The levels of blood glucose and blood lactate in SIRS group were significantly higher than those in control group (P <0.01 and P <0.05) However, there was no correlation between the increase of blood glucose and the increase of blood lactate (P> 0.05). Conclusions The incidence of SIRS in critically ill children is high, and the metabolic parameters such as blood glucose and blood lactate are significantly increased during SIRS
