从最近“出版发行、书评书讯”等有关报刊上众多的饱含着写书人辛酸之泪的文章来看,“以书代酬”、“作者包销”诚然是出版社为了生存、发展的竞争之术,但从长远看,对文化事业的发展是极为不利的。回忆历史,我国虽是四大文明古国之一,但文化事业发展缓慢,如今文盲占有四分之一,曾经盛行的“文凭热”正在过时,“文化热”逐渐降温,“读书无用论”有所抬头,读者的兴趣和购买力转到了一般消遣性书刊上,学术性越高的书买的人越少。一个一心扑在事业上的知识分子写一部书,花费的心血越多,包销的数量越大。相反的,选编、辑录而成的通俗读物却使编者们无忧无愁,这样下去还有谁愿搞学术
