汤亭亭(Maxine Hong Kingston),美国著名华裔女作家,1976年发表的《女勇士——一个生活在鬼中间的女孩的童年回忆》一经出版立即引起了美国文坛的轰动,汤亭亭也凭借此书一跃成为美国华裔文坛的佼佼者。汤亭亭在《女勇士》中讲述了五个充满东方色彩的故事,并且成功地刻画了“鬼”和“萨满”这两个意象。本文从后殖民主义的视角入手浅析这两个意象,认为“鬼魂”在文本中就是各种“他者”的代言,而在中国传统文化中能够通灵的萨满则是异族发声的主体,汤亭亭期望借助从他者到女勇士的身份转化来改变华裔女性在美国夹缝中求生存的窘境。
