鱼类精液冻结保存研究,是从1953年布拉库斯塔尔的鲱鱼精液保存半年并且成功授精开始的。其后此法试用于鲑科鱼类、海产鱼及鲤科淡水鱼类等,目前几乎所有鱼类精液都有进行冻结保存的可能。鱼类,特别是鲑科鱼类雌雄性成熟期有时相差数周,给育苗生产带来了障碍。尤以大麻哈鱼、马苏大麻哈鱼为严重。在育苗上一般只好采取用长日电照处理雄鱼来推迟精子成熟期以待和成熟卵授精的方法。
