无论在信息的“属性”观点还是“功能”观点中,列宁的反映论都是对信息本质进行哲学分析的方法论基础。在属性观点中,信息是物质系统的客观属性,这一属性不依赖于这一时刻信息是否被其它系统所使用。根据这种观点,在无机界,信息在功能上没有被分化出来,没有得到利用;信息就象映象一样,在某种程度上是以相互作用着的客体被动相随的现象而出现的。反映的痕迹在反映的客体中并不带有记忆的功能。在属性观点中信息是系统有序性的量度。信息对被反映客体而言是派生的,被反映客观的有序性和结构在相互作用的过程中转移到反映的系统中。信息的内容是客观世界作用于系统的那些对象和现象的属性与特征(信息与反映的内容同一的观点)。反映概念和信息的差别在于,信息概念强调的更多的是被反映的多样性之有序性、信息过程和物质-能量过程之统一原则,以及在信号的基本“字母表”中对被反映出的作用进行编码。
Lenin's theory of reflection is the methodological basis for the philosophical analysis of the nature of information, both in the “attribute” and the “functional” perspective of information.
